What's CHI?

CHI (pronounced CHEE) is the physical energy which flows throughout our bodies. This notion comes from very old Chinese medicine and serves well as a metaphor for the different feeling and energy-level connections between different parts of our bodies. Thinking of it as similar to an electrical current going from, say, our genitals up our back bone to our head and then, after suffusing our brain with energy, flowing back down our front past our heart chakra and down to our toes is a classical way of envisioning this flow. Joseph Kramer reports that many gaymen find it seems to flow the other direction, from the furnace of our perineum up our front to our head.

What I find useful about this metaphor is that we can, with patience and some investment of belief, get past a static view of our erotic and spiritual motivation/initiative to attempt some conscious influencing of these phenomena. For me, this means I am less a righteous marble statue holding the pose of rectitude (I am a descendant of Jonathan Edwards, after all) and am more a living, changeable presence with no fixed pose of attitude. Further, CHI is the electric charge moving me, making my transformations happen. It is the current driving my creativity, my zest and my contentment, grappling with the dark forces of depression and sadness which have at times seemed rather monstrous.

A reference on CHI, Taoist thinking and erotic fullness that I find quite useful is:

The Multi-Orgasmic Man: Sexual Secrets Every Man Should Know.
by Mantak Chia and Douglas Abrams Arava 1996 San Francisco: HarperSan Francisco (HarperCollins).
This book works for both gaymen and straight men.
